Who We Are

Ashburton Care was founded on the principle of “treating others, the same as you would like to be treated”.  This was borne from the co-founder Ranjit Singh’s experience of personally caring for his grandfather who suffered from Parkinson’s disease for 10 years.  This inspired Ranjit to work in Supported Living.  It was during Ranjit’s time working in Supported Living where he felt there should be greater choice, control and person centred care provided to service users.  This inspired Ranjit to build a Supported Living Service which he would be happy for someone he loved to be placed in.  Ranjit strongly feels that service users should be encouraged to dream and have aspirations so as to lead a more fulfilled life.

Our SLS homes are specifically designed to feel like a home that is comfortable, clean, warm and inviting.  We ensure those we work with have a sense of belonging and ownership of their home. Together with providing a positive home environment, we are passionate to deliver our vision of service users’ lives being filled with opportunities enabling them to be part of their wider community.

This aim to offer a fulfilled life was further developed by forming a co-production with a local Scouts Group to create an activity centre for people with learning disabilities and autism.  Find out more about the Ashburton Activity Centre here.

This vision of a holistic approach to care is embedded into our Mission Statement where the service user is at the heart of everything we do.

What we believe

Promoting choice.

It essential that we get to know our service users to ensure we gather valuable insights into who they are and how they want to be supported.  We involve service users in every aspect of their assessment so we capture their views and feelings about their care.

By encouraging this involvement with decisions it enables us to adopt a consultative approach where:

  • We do not choose activities, we offer choices and opportunities
  • We do not take over, we encourage
  • We do not say no and set up obstacles, we find creative ways to do to make things happen.
  • We do not schedule activities according to staff rotas, we arrange support based on preferences.

Gaining independence.

We all have our unique strengths, skills and limitations.  It is by giving the opportunity to develop as an individual that valuable skills can be attained.  It is through expanding comfort zones that creates the steps towards greater levels of independence.  Our belief that service users should be given the same opportunities to become members of their greater community developing meaningful connections with that wider community.

Achieving fulfilment.

We value everyone as an individual and that all are entitled to a sense of self -worth. Through our person centred approach we work with our service users to overcome the challenges and barriers that make these basic human rights difficult to achieve.  We appreciate that achieving a sense of fulfilment is on on-going and evolving journey which is why the provision and communication of choice feeds directly into ensuring we can help our service users to accomplish and achieve their dreams and aspirations.
